Customer Reviews for: Left Behind: A Novel of the Earth's Last Days (Left Behind No. 1)

Rating 1 out of 5 - Potter is hotter!
As a work of fantasy, the Left Behind series is third-rate. It lacks the humor and exuberance of the Harry Potter books; the magical acts it portrays are quite simply boring. It lacks the sparkling darkness of language that makes the His Dark Materials books a delight to read. It lacks the sweep and grandeur of the Lord of the Rings series. Note please that I'm reviewing Left Behind merely as escapist fantasy literature. As theology, it's too contemptible to need reviewing. As a morality tale, it's even more contemptible, an interminable drone of bigotry, sexism, self-righteousness, and exploitation of the decent folk who congregate in America's churches.

Rating 3 out of 5 - rapture = myth
LUKE CHAPTER 17 "And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all." Christ here is using the "days of Noah" as a example of the decadence and un-Godliness of society, at the end of times, "eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage," "until the flood came, and took them away [destroyed them all]"- in the time of Noah who was washed away by the flood? It was the evil doers were taken away [destroyed], Christ tells us "so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." "Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all." Luke give us the farther example of the days of Lot, the again we see decadence and un-Godliness of the people, oblivious to will of God. Here again we see that it is the evil doer that is removed and destroyed. "I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left." "the one shall be taken" as we have learned from both gospel account the ones taken away are the evil doer, those destined for destruction. NOT the good [the "Elect"], these verse do not refer to any form of "RAPTURE" of the "ELECT". Those that are "left" will remain with the lord. We can see from Matt. 24:29 the coming of the Lord takes place after the tribulation. In V.30 we see that. "all the tribes of the earth.. shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory." This is no secret coming, or secret Rapture, this is a GREAT coming, a visible coming, of the powerful and almighty God, and all shall see it. Again we see that these verses do not refer to any form of secret pre-tribulation "rapture"

Rating 5 out of 5 - Great time waster!
I gave this 5 stars because I really think it is a fun read. I don't normally read fiction but this is great. Just settle into your favorite couch, make a cup of coffee, switch your brain off and enjoy. Just don't take it seriously like some do.

It's a roller coaster ride and it gives a bit of a "Hollywood" flavor to Eschatology but it's a work of fiction based on the most interesting and metaphorical book of the Bible.

And any book that gets people talking about Jesus & the Bible (in a good or a bad way) is good.

Rating 1 out of 5 - Morons, Your Bus is Leaving
I read it cover to cover and even sat through the Kirk (Growing Pains) Cameron movie because I was a guest at a family's house one Easter and they wanted to watch it. This book (and the movie, for that matter) is righteous trash. I wish I could be surprised by this book's success and the simple fact that so many take it at face value but I know all too well how easily led and not the slightest bit introspective the television, public school and chocolate-frosted-sugar-bomb raised sheep of this wonderful country are. The same exact slack-jawed ignorant self described Christian yokels who think The Passion of the Christ is a great and accurate movie honestly believe Left Behind is an accurate description of Christ's returning to claim his own. Even the most cursory reading of the bible will inform the informable how completely unbiblical and unchristian this book and the subsequent cash-cow series are. Self described Christians do neither themselves nor real Christians any favors by buying into and enthusiastically promoting this purient trash. No wonder many nonchristians think all Christians are a bunch of illiterate loony fools. How could they not? Add to that the fact that, even by the diminshed standards of today's fiction writing, Left Behind is incredibly shoddily written. LaHaye & Jenkins are lottery winning charlatans who, if they had an ounce of integrity, would be deeply ashamed of themselves. Quite the opposite, they are too busy laughing all the way to the bank. I blush to imagine what intelligent thoughtful foreigners must think when they are exposed to American quasi Christian culture.
